I was a bit worried by the words ‘skin tint’, as I like my foundation smooth but thick. I’m not looking for a tinted moisturiser that still shows off all my blemishes, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the new Velvet Matte Skin Tint offers a beautiful medium ‘buildable’ coverage and natural finish. I usually opt for the palest skin tone when choosing foundations, but I was given the ‘Finland 01’ colour – the second lightest which helped give me a healthy glow, and with yellow undertones, has a creamier finish than the lighter shade Terre-Neuve, which has more pink undertones.
The Velvet Matte Skin Tint comes with broad spectrum SPF 30 similar to their other moisturizing products to protect the skin from environmental stress. Rose fruit extract (aka rosehip) also provides antioxidant benefits with its high concentration of Vitamin C and Vitamin E to minimize pores and control shine.
The texture is very thick and 'mousse' like, but is easy blend, applies smoothly, covers redness and evens out the skin. I struggled a bit on the first application – using my fingers but battling with its initial ‘sticky’ feel when you apply it to your skin. However, after smoothing it out with a sponge, it gave me a fresh, natural look. It dries to a velvety finish without looking flat or too dry like the name matte often implies, and manages to stay on my oily skin all day without separating, fading or creasing – even through an intense evening workout!
With a sheer coverage (that can be built up to medium) it doesn’t promise to cover every single freckle or imperfection. The NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint might not be something I’d wear during my worst weeks of hormones and spots, but ticks my boxes for a lighter, more care-free holiday product and a high-contender that I will definitely keep in my beauty cupboard.
In a nutshell
Silky smooth to the touch and surprisingly generous with the coverage, this ‘skin tint’ is, indeed, just the type of velvety matte that NARS does so well. It has excellent shine control and oil-absorbing properties, but it doesn’t leave skin looking chalky or flat—rather, the finish is soft-focus, blurring imperfections and evening out the rest, including dark spots, under-eye circles, blemishes, and enlarged pores. If you’re shiny-faced by nature, you’re going to love this stuff, but it’s just as suitable for dry and normal skin types that don’t need much on the oil-control front.
