The following 'comical strip' similar to those on BuzzFeed is one I created and sent to The Boyfriend (TB) after a small 'yelling match' about a holiday to Norway I was expected to pay for without much information on what or where we would be spending our week away. Because of my scepticism of staying at a 'friend's cabin' and TB accusing me of not being able to ski, I was worried about many things, including smelly bed sheets, a tiny cabin, and overall a seriously hyped up holiday which would lead to imminent disappointment. As a result, the flights were not booked that night, and it was me who booked the flights the following morning with a £50 increase. To reveal my thoughts and worries to TB, I concocted the following email which is largely based on what he had said the trip would be like... and the images that had conjured up in my head. Read on!
I've decided we're going to go to Offaülagen* for our holiday.
We will drive to the cabin in the mountains. Don't worry, it'll only take 6 hours. It'll be fun! We can play car games like.. spot the yellow car. Or.. spot the yellow snow! Whatever, we can sing-a-long to the radio... that is out of range.
This will be the view outside out bedroom. And such good snow! Did you want to ski for 4 or 5 days? Let me know so I can book our ski passes. Oh and by the way, they're non-refundable.
It's only a short walk to the cabin, it'll be fun. It's not that steep. It'll be a great workout when we're coming back after a drunken meal out.
Oh yes, and here's the cabin! It'll be very cosy with all eight of us. There's even a sauna (if we leave the top off the boiling kettle for long enough). The whole place heats up really fast.
And it won't be too cold at night. We'll just wear our salopettes for pyjamas. And the holes in the boarding is natural light to wake us up bright and early.
Here's our bed. It'll be so comfy if we squish together into one and share body heat to keep warm. We can Febreeze the bed sheets to freshen them up. They'll be as good as new!
On days off from Skiing, we can spend the day snuggling on the sofa and reading. It'll be a laugh!
Skiing will be so much fun, even if I can't ski.
We can bring back lots of happy memories and souvenirs.
Oh, and if we don't book in the next hour YOU'LL be paying the difference. Happy thinking!
* Offaülagen is a completely made up and fictional destination. It served the same purpose to TB as 'Stavanger' and 'the mountains' served me. All pictures have been sourced from Google Images.
This email achieved what it set out to do, and TB's frustrations were resolved (and caused many laughs between friends who were treated to this email titled 'Your BA Booking'). We went on the holiday and it was one of the best holidays I could have asked for: we spent 7 days with some extremely lovely and fun people, and I surprised myself (and TB) with my skiing ability.
Indeed, there was a swimming pool, a glorious sauna, and the huge cabin in Sirdal was the cosiest, warmest, and cleanest cabin I could have asked for. Five star! And, I have learned not to be so negative with my expectations next time. A massive thank you to our hosts.
