According to the New York Daily News, Footwear giant Sketchers have been forced to pay out $40million to customers as it was proven that the Shape-Up trainers do not deliver a toned bum, legs and stomach, nor the body of Kim Kardashian. So what about the rest of these gimmicks? Here is how to tell if that latest butt toner, ab cruncher or bingo wing blaster is better as a dog chew than a fitness accessory.
Too Good to be True
Before you spend a fortune on something promised to refine and reshape your body whilst you sleep, take a minute to think about it, and read up on the reviews from other websites. If these items were a bona fide bargain, then wouldn’t we all have the figure of Gisele?
Diet and Exercise go Hand-in-Hand
You can work out for 60 minutes each day, but if your eating habits remain poor, you will not lose weight. Most of these gizmos promise all sorts of fantastic results, and whilst it is possible that some of them may work, they often fail to mention the part where you’re supposed to follow a healthy diet and exercise regime alongside it.
No Pain, No Gain
It’s rare get anywhere without a bit of hard work, so to expect such fantastic results without doing so is rather naive. To lose weight, you need to get your heart rate up for 30 minutes a day, which is something no ab belt or good-looking postman will ever help achieve. Sorry to burst your bubble, but you’ll never get a ‘workout while you walk’ or ‘get in shape without setting foot in a gym’; losing weight and getting fit takes effort, and not just changing your order to ‘diet coke’.
There’s No Such Thing as Spot-Reduction
Despite what many of these companies promise, there is no real way to spot-reduce your midsection fat and reveal ripped abs by using some gizmo for just five minutes a day. Diet and exercise will change your body from top to toe and there is no way of controlling what you’ll lose first.
Shapers aren't the first to get in trouble for their concocted claims last November; rivals Reebok were fined $25 million for promoting their EasyTone shoes to tone bums and calf muscles. When it comes to getting fit - turns out there are no short cuts, so get pavement pounding!
